Best Enchantments in Minecraft by Item (Table)

October 30, 2026 · 6 min read

On this page

The best enchantments in Minecraft are Mending and Unbreaking III on nearly everything, plus Protection IV on all armor, Sharpness V on swords, and Efficiency V with Fortune III on pickaxes. Use the table below for each item's full set, then the second table to see which pairs the game refuses to combine.

Levels and compatibility rules below reflect Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.60. "Best" is a judgment call that depends on how you play, so real choices are noted.

What are the best enchantments for each item?

Sword Sharpness V, Looting III, Fire Aspect II, Sweeping Edge III, Unbreaking III, Mending Sweeping Edge is Java only. Knockback II is optional and can push mobs out of reach

Which Minecraft enchantments can't be combined?

The game blocks these pairs at the anvil and the enchanting table. On Java, commands can force them together, but that is outside normal survival.

Group Pick one What usually wins
Armor protection Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection, Projectile Protection Protection IV for general play
Melee damage Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods Sharpness
Mace damage Density, Breach, Smite, Bane of Arthropods Density or Breach
Tools Silk Touch, Fortune Depends on the job
Bow Infinity, Mending Mending for long-term use
Crossbow Multishot, Piercing Depends on the target
Trident Riptide versus Loyalty or Channeling Loyalty and Channeling can sit together, Riptide cannot join either
Boots Depth Strider, Frost Walker Depth Strider if you swim often

Wiki articles for the main conflicts do not list any Bedrock exception, but they also do not always state the Bedrock rule separately. If you run into a surprise on Bedrock, trust what the anvil shows.

Is Protection or Blast Protection better?

Protection IV is the better default. Each level gives 4% reduction per armor piece, so four pieces at IV give 64%, and total reduction from armor enchantments caps at 80%. It applies across most damage types, including magic since Bedrock 1.18.30.

Specialized types do twice the work against their own damage type but nothing against other damage. They make sense for a dedicated swap set, such as Blast Protection for creeper-heavy areas. Keep in mind Java's Warden sonic boom ignores Protection entirely.

Is Sharpness stronger on Bedrock than on Java?

Yes. Bedrock gives far more bonus damage per level.

Level Java bonus Bedrock bonus
I 1 HP 1 HP
II 1.5 HP 2 HP
III 2 HP 3 HP
IV 2.5 HP 5 HP
V 3 HP 6 HP

So a netherite sword with Sharpness V deals 11 HP on Java and 15 HP on Bedrock. Other differences affect the choice of weapon as well. A netherite axe at Sharpness V hits for 13 HP on Java and 14 HP on Bedrock, but Java axes swing slowly and take Sharpness only through an anvil, whereas Bedrock accepts it at the table.

Should you use Density or Breach on a mace?

Density V boosts smash attacks only and rewards height, so choose it for fall-based play. Breach IV reduces armor effectiveness by 15% per level and works on regular hits too, giving the mace the highest normal-hit damage of any melee weapon against diamond or netherite armor.

The wiki's example shows the difference. Against a full-health player in Protection IV netherite, a critical smash needs about 30 blocks of falling with no enchantment, 19 with Breach IV, and 10 with Density V. Density is ahead for smashes, while Breach also helps on plain swings.

Wind Burst III launches you upward after a smash, by about 8 blocks per level, and does not cancel fall damage. It comes only from ominous vaults in trial chambers. On Bedrock, Smite, Bane of Arthropods and Fire Aspect can go on a mace at the enchanting table; Java needs an anvil.

Which enchantments can you only get from loot?

A few of the best options skip both the enchanting table and villagers.

Enchantment Where it comes from
Swift Sneak Ancient city chests only
Soul Speed Bastion remnant chests, piglin bartering, and boots worn by piglins
Wind Burst Ominous vaults in trial chambers
Mending Librarians, fishing, loot chests. Raid drops on Bedrock too

Mending and most other books can be bought, which is why a librarian is the quickest route to a full kit. The villager trading guide covers rerolling and price cuts.

Are Thorns and Soul Speed worth using?

Thorns is optional. Each worn piece rolls separately, for 15% per level, and deals 1 to 5 HP to the attacker. Every piece that triggers loses 2 extra durability, even if its hit was not the highest. Stacking doesn't scale well either, since four pieces of Thorns III average about 3.32 HP per hit. With Mending, the durability loss is manageable; without it, skip it.

Soul Speed III adds 61.5% walking speed on soul sand and soul soil, which helps during Nether travel but costs boots durability with a 4% chance per block. Lunge on spears has a similar trade-off, costing hunger and 1 durability per use, and it won't work below 7 hunger points, while gliding, riding, or in water.

How do you combine enchantments on an anvil?

Each anvil use on an item raises its next cost, and the amount roughly doubles every time. Survival anvils refuse any job above 39 levels and show "Too Expensive". Plan ahead and get several enchantments on the item in as few steps as possible.

For the pickaxe you take mining for diamonds, start at the enchanting table and only use the anvil for what is missing. If you get a good pair of books, combine those before adding them.

FAQ

What is the best enchantment in Minecraft overall?

Most players would say Mending, because it turns XP into repairs on almost any gear, restoring 2 durability for each XP point. It is an opinion, but a widely held one.

Can you put Mending and Infinity on the same bow?

No, not in survival. They have been mutually exclusive on Java regardless of anvil order since 1.11.1. Commands on Java can apply both.

What is the maximum level of each main enchantment?

Sharpness, Smite, Power, Efficiency, Impaling and Density top out at V. Protection, Feather Falling, Breach and Piercing top out at IV. Fortune, Looting, Unbreaking, Lunge and Wind Burst top out at III.
