Nether Portal Calculator

Convert Minecraft Overworld and Nether coordinates to link portals exactly.

How Nether coordinates work

Every block you travel in the Nether covers 8 blocks in the Overworld. To convert, divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to get the Nether position, or multiply Nether X and Z by 8 to go back. Y is not scaled, because height is not part of the 8:1 ratio.

How to link two Nether portals

  1. Stand at your Overworld portal and press F3 on Java Edition to read its coordinates. On Bedrock Edition, turn on Show Coordinates in the world settings.
  2. Enter X, Y and Z in the Overworld side of the calculator.
  3. Build the Nether portal at the coordinates shown on the Nether side, as close to that spot as you can.

The game links a portal to the closest matching portal in range, so two portals that sit near each other can connect to the wrong one. Exact coordinates are the simplest way to avoid that.

Why it is useful for fast travel

Because of the 8:1 ratio, a 1,600-block trip in the Overworld takes only 200 blocks in the Nether. A pair of linked portals at each base makes a tunnel between them far quicker than the surface route.
