Minecraft Pixel Art Generator

Turn any image into Minecraft pixel art. Get the exact blocks you need and row-by-row build steps for a wall or map art.

How to use the pixel art generator

  1. Upload a picture, or drag it onto the upload box. Simple images with large areas of flat colour, such as logos, game sprites and cartoons, turn out best.
  2. Set the width in blocks. The height follows from your image's proportions.
  3. Choose Wall for an upright build, or Floor for a picture laid flat on the ground or for map art.
  4. Pick which block groups you are willing to collect. More groups give the generator more colours to work with.
  5. Check the block list, then follow the build steps one row at a time.

Your image never leaves your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

How the blocks are chosen

Each block in your picture becomes one block in the world. The generator averages the colours in that part of the image and picks the block whose texture colour looks closest, using a colour model built to match how people see colour. Block colours come from the average of each block's 26.3 texture.

Some colours have no close match. Minecraft has no bright pure red block, for example, so a vivid red often comes out as orange or red concrete. Turning on dithering mixes nearby blocks to fake in-between shades, which helps photos and gradients but makes the build harder to place.

Choosing the right size

Width Good for Rough block count for a square image
16-32 Sprites, icons, small logos 256-1,024
64 Detailed characters and logos 4,096
128 One full map for map art 16,384
256 Large photo-style builds 65,536

A wall build cannot be taller than 384 blocks, the distance between the lowest and highest build limits in the Overworld. For anything big, a floor build is easier, since you never need scaffolding.

Tips for building pixel art in survival

  • Concrete gives the brightest, flattest colours. Craft concrete powder from sand, gravel and dye, then place it next to water to harden it.
  • Terracotta has muted earthy tones that suit skin, wood and shadows.
  • Wool burns, so keep it away from lava and fire.
  • Remove any block you cannot get with the ✕ in the block list, and the picture is redrawn without it.
  • Tick each block in the list once it is in your inventory, and use the row steps or the arrow keys to keep your place while building.
  • One shulker box holds 27 stacks, or 1,728 blocks.

FAQ

Does this work on Bedrock Edition?

Yes. All the blocks it uses exist on both Java and Bedrock, so the block list and build steps work on either edition.

How do I make Minecraft map art?

Choose Floor, set the width to 128 and build on flat ground. One map covers 128 × 128 blocks, and building row 1 along the north edge makes the picture face the right way on the map.

Why does my picture look different in game?

Block textures have patterns and shading, while the preview shows each block's average colour. The picture also looks lighter or darker depending on light level, so build in daylight or light the area well.

Can I save the instructions?

Open the full row-by-row list under the build steps, select the text and copy it into a note.
