Minecraft Tellraw Generator
Build Minecraft /tellraw messages with colours, hex, bold, click and hover events. Outputs Java 1.21.5+, Java 1.20.5–1.21.4 and Bedrock rawtext.
This generator builds /tellraw chat messages from coloured, styled parts with optional click actions and hover text. You get three commands at once: Java 1.21.5 and later (including 26.x), Java 1.20.5–1.21.4, and Bedrock Edition.
How to use it
- Choose who gets the message:
@a(everyone),@p,@s,@r, or a player name. - Type the text for the first part, then set its colour and style. The styles are bold, italic, underlined, strikethrough and obfuscated.
- Optionally give the part a click action and hover text.
- Press Add part to add more pieces with different styles. Parts are joined with no space, so put spaces inside the text.
- Check the chat preview (hover over parts to see their tooltips), then copy the command for your version.
Java 1.21.5 and later: SNBT
From Java 1.21.5, text components are written in SNBT. The keys have no quotes:
/tellraw @a {text:"I am blue",color:"blue"}
Click and hover events were renamed to click_event and hover_event. Each click action has its own field:
| Click action | 1.21.5+ field | Before 1.21.5 |
|---|---|---|
| Open a URL | url |
value |
| Run a command | command (no / needed) |
value (starts with /) |
| Suggest a command | command |
value |
| Copy to clipboard | value |
value |
| Change book page | page (number) |
value |
Hover text uses hover_event:{action:"show_text",value:"..."}.
Java 1.20.5 to 1.21.4: JSON
Before 1.21.5, the message is JSON with quoted keys, and the events are called clickEvent and hoverEvent:
/tellraw @a {"text":"Hover me!","hoverEvent":{"action":"show_text","contents":"Hi!"}}
The tool adds the leading / to run-command actions in this format, because the older format needs it.
Multiple parts
With more than one part, the tool writes a list that starts with an empty string: ["",{...},{...}]. Each part keeps its own style. Without the empty first element, the first part's style would carry over to all the others.
Bedrock Edition: rawtext and § codes
Bedrock uses a different format:
/tellraw @a {"rawtext":[{"text":"§9I am blue"}]}
Colours and styles are written as § codes inside the text. The tool converts each part:
- The 16 named colours become
§0to§f. For example,§6is gold and§bis aqua. - Bold is
§l, italic is§oand obfuscated is§k. - Hex colours become the closest of the 16 named colours.
- Underline and strikethrough are dropped. On Bedrock,
§mand§nare colours, not styles. - Click and hover events are dropped, because Bedrock doesn't support them in chat.
On Bedrock, formatting carries over after a colour code, so the tool adds §r (reset) at the start of each part that follows a styled one.
The 16 colours
black, dark_blue, dark_green, dark_aqua, dark_red, dark_purple, gold, gray, dark_gray, blue, green, aqua, red, light_purple, yellow and white. On Java you can also use any hex colour, such as #FF8800.
FAQ
Why doesn't my clickable text work?
Check that you copied the command for your version. 1.21.5 and later need click_event with the new field names, while older versions need clickEvent. URLs must start with http:// or https://.
Can players run any command by clicking?
The command runs as the player who clicks, with that player's permissions. Chat-sending commands like /say can't be run from a click.
Does change page work in chat? No. It only works in written books.
Why is my message too long for chat? The chat box takes 256 characters. Longer commands go in a command block, which accepts up to 32,500.
