Minecraft Give Command Generator
Build Minecraft /give commands with custom names, coloured lore, enchantments, unbreakable and hidden tooltips for Java 1.20.5 to 26.x.
This generator writes a Java Edition /give command for any item, with a custom name, lore, enchantments and other item components. Pick an item, set the options, and copy the command into chat or a command block. It covers Java 1.21.5 and later (including the 26.x releases) and the older 1.20.5–1.21.4 format.
How to use it
- Choose your game version at the top. The default, 1.21.5 and later, also covers 26.x.
- Search for an item by name (for example "netherite sword") and click it. You can also type any item ID and press Enter, which is handy for newer or modded items.
- Set the count, then add a custom name and lore lines. Each line has its own colour and bold, italic, underlined, strikethrough and obfuscated buttons.
- Add enchantments with a level from 1 to 255. The tool warns you when a level is above the normal maximum.
- Under Other options, make the item unbreakable, set damage, force the enchantment glint on or off, hide parts of the tooltip, or add custom model data.
- Check the tooltip preview, then press Copy command.
How /give works since 1.20.5
Since Java 1.20.5, items carry data components instead of the old NBT tag. The command looks like this:
/give <target> item_id[component=value,component=value] [count]
The component values are written in SNBT. For example, /give @s diamond_sword[enchantments={sharpness:5}] gives a Sharpness V diamond sword in 1.21.5 and later.
Version 1.21.5 changed two things this tool handles for you:
| What | 1.21.5 and later (incl. 26.x) | 1.20.5 – 1.21.4 |
|---|---|---|
| Custom name | custom_name={text:"Sword",color:"gold"} |
custom_name='{"text":"Sword","color":"gold"}' |
| Lore | lore=[{text:"Line one"}] |
lore=['{"text":"Line one"}'] |
| Enchantments | enchantments={sharpness:5} |
enchantments={levels:{sharpness:5}} |
| Hide tooltip parts | tooltip_display={...} |
not offered |
Before 1.21.5, names and lore were JSON text inside single quotes. From 1.21.5 they are SNBT text components, so you write them without the extra quotes.
Names, colours and italics
Custom item names and lore show in italics unless you turn that off, so the tool always writes italic:false unless you press the italic button. Lore is dark purple by default. You can pick one of the 16 named Minecraft colours or any hex colour, such as #FF8800.
The preview shows how the name and lore will look. It is an approximation: it doesn't draw enchantment or attribute lines, and in the game an enchanted item's name can show in aqua or light purple depending on the item's rarity.
Enchantment levels
Commands accept enchantment levels from 1 to 255, even for enchantments whose normal maximum is 1, like Mending. Higher levels don't always help. Many enchantments stop scaling past a certain level. The tool lists each enchantment's normal maximum and flags anything above it.
Other components
- Unbreakable (
unbreakable={}) stops the item losing durability and adds a blue "Unbreakable" line. - Damage is the amount of durability already used, not what's left. It only works on items with durability.
- Enchantment glint (
enchantment_glint_override) forces the shimmer on or off. - Hide tooltip parts (1.21.5+) uses
tooltip_display, either to hide the whole tooltip or just lines such as enchantments. - Custom model data (1.21.4+ format) passes floats and strings to a resource pack. It does nothing without one.
Long commands
The chat box takes 256 characters. If your command is longer, the tool tells you. Paste it into a command block instead, which accepts up to 32,500 characters.
Frequently asked questions
How do you use the /give command in Minecraft?
Type /give, a target and an item ID in chat in a world with cheats on, for example /give @s diamond 64. Since Java 1.20.5, extra data such as names and enchantments goes in square brackets right after the item ID. The generator builds the full command for you.
Does the give command generator work on Bedrock Edition?
No. Bedrock's /give doesn't support item components like custom names, lore or enchantments, so these commands are Java Edition only.
Why is my item name italic?
Custom names are italic by default. Leave the italic button off and the tool adds italic:false so the name shows normally.
What is the highest enchantment level you can give?
The highest level is 255. Commands accept levels from 1 to 255, even for enchantments whose normal maximum is 1, so Sharpness 1000 isn't possible. Many enchantments stop scaling past a certain level, so higher isn't always better.
My command says "Unknown item". What's wrong?
Check the item ID spelling and your game version. The item list comes from Minecraft 26.1 data, so items added later can still be typed in by ID, but they only work if your version has them.
Why is my /give command too long for chat?
The chat box takes 256 characters, and long lore or many enchantments go past that. Paste the command into a command block instead, which accepts up to 32,500 characters. The tool tells you when a command is too long for chat.
Why can't I hide tooltip parts for 1.20.5–1.21.4?
The way tooltips were hidden changed during that version range. To keep the commands reliable, the tool only offers the tooltip_display component, which works from 1.21.5 on.
